Many people know the name Crispus Attucks, but few know about the man himself. Sometimes in the African American community there is a feeling of detachment and resentment towards our country. Some even go so far to say that the U.S. is not their country. I am sure if Crispus were alive today he would have words with anyone who suggested something so ridiculous.
Crispus was credited as the first American to die in the American Revolution. He was an American of mixed African and Native American heritage, and most importantly, he was a free man. He was killed while protesting the British occupation of the colonies as a free man, there on his own free will. An often overlooked point was at a time of rampant racism, his death was met with expressions of solidarity and appreciation for this patriot’s sacrifice. Very few newspapers at the time even referred to his race when reporting on the incident, something very remarkable at the time.
Crispus’ become an instant martyr and a rallying icon of not only of the American Revolution, but of the anti slavery movement.

Happy Independence Day to all my fellow Americans! Remember today isn’t just another day off of work. It has important meaning that should be honored and treasured.

I’m so tired of hearing about Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann. Neither of them have done anything more than pay a little lip service to conservative principles, yet so many seem to have ordained them as conservative saints.
What have either of them done to be deserving of so much attention? Bachmann voted for the Patriot Act! Why some are so easily duped into jumping on political bandwagons every year is beyond me. They are only setting themselves up for future disappointment when these two end up being nothing more than two more establishment RINO’s who found a convenient crown to pander to.

I’m sure everyone is aware that the state of New York recently passed legislation legalizing gay marriage. The irony is that this was accomplished primarily thanks to the support of key Republicans.
I really don’t understand the strong opposition to gay marriage. I am a Christian and have read the Bible. The few times homosexuality is mentioned in the Bible really doesn’t deserve the amount of opposition put forth by Christian conservatives. Is homosexuality wrong? Most likely. But in my opinion it is probably on par with other “sins” such as jerking off or whistling at a young blonde. It really doesn’t hurt anyone. God, in his infinite wisdom, explicitly gave mankind free will and it is contrary for believers to try and force their interpretation of his word onto anyone.
Most importantly, regardless of it’s moral position, it is not the government’s position to enforce morality. In my opinion government shouldn’t be involved in marriages at all. The fact that I had to go to the courthouse for the government’s permission to get married, even as a heterosexual male, is kind of ridiculous.
I’m not anti-gay, I’m not pro-gay. I really don’t care either way. Our country has much more pressing issues in need of our attention.
